Defending Human Rights of Roma and Travellers on the basis of European standards

The Support Team of the Special Representative of the Secretary General for Roma issues, the Cardiff Law School and the Advice on Individual Rights in Europe Centre are organising a training session on 2nd July 2013 for barristers and solicitors who have acted or who wish to act for Roma and Travellers before national courts.

This training session aims to strengthen and supplement the knowledge and the legal capacity of legal practitioners in the field of Roma and Travellers rights, by presenting relevant international and national standards including the European Court of Human Rights case law and by providing practical examples on the use of these standards before national courts.

The training session will include :

· relevant standards set by the Council of Europe (European Convention on Human Rights, Resolutions, Recommendations, Opinions and Reports of the bodies of the Organisation); relevant European Union law.

· Identification of the issues Roma and Travellers face;

· Practical cases and a simple moot court

The training session will be conducted by the Council of Europe legal experts : Ms Nuala Mole, Mr Luke Clements and Mr Marc Willers.

The beneficiaries (maximum of 20 persons) must be barristers and solicitors already defending or wishing to defend Roma and Travellers rights.

Solicitors Regulation Authority & Bar CPD accreditation being sought.

The Council of Europe will cover expenses related to participation to the training session (transport, accommodation, lunch and dinners).

A cover letter, as well as a CV, written in English must reach the roma.team@coe.int no later than the 21 June 2013.

EU lawmaker to Canada asylum seeker: A Roma's long trek

Toronto, 16/06/2013 - Less than four years ago, Viktoria Mohacsi enjoyed the life of an international politician, eating at pricey restaurants in Brussels and winning awards as a human rights activist.

Today, the 38-year old mother of three sleeps on the floor of a one-room basement apartment in Toronto and faces deportation. As a political asylum seeker, she hopes to convince Canada that the life of a former member of the European Parliament could be in danger in a democratic country like Hungary.

She will tell her story at a hearing before the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada starting on Tuesday. In a test case for the Canadian government's new immigration policy that considers nearly all EU countries "safe", Mohacsi, a Roma, claims she would be in danger of violence from hate groups and persecution by authorities if she went home to Hungary.

Dear Mr. Katz,

Of course, it is very important to know the results of investigation over incident when a Romanian journalist Mircea Marian was verbally harassed and physically attacked by a hooligan anti-Semite in Bucharest. But, in my opinion, there is no even need to ask on how deep the anti-Semitism is buried in todays Romanian mentality and spirit. This is because in the athmosphere of centuries-old strong anti-Tziganizm even today expressed in all spheres of life in Romania, the dislike of other minorities does not look surprising at all. Todays anti-Jewish and anti-Hungarian sentiments are simply the weak shadows of much stronger notion of Romanian anti-Tziganizm.
