Romanian newspaper attacks Hillary Clinton for calling for removal of bust of fascist leader

BUCHAREST, Romania - A pro-government newspaper on Friday criticized U.S. Senator Hillary Clinton for urging Romania to remove public statues of a former prime minister who was implicated in the killing of tens of thousands of Jews and Gypsies.
The daily Cronica Romana argued in a front-page editorial that Clinton unfairly singled out Marshal Ion Antonescu, a Hitler ally who was Romania's prime minister from 1940 to 1944. The editorial accused Clinton of ``fighting with the memory of a dead person.''
Clinton and seven other U.S. senators sent a letter to Prime Minister Adrian Nastase on June 20, urging him to fulfill pledges to remove Antonescu statues and change the name of streets bearing Antonescu-related names. The letter also urged Nastase to remove an Antonescu bust in government headquarters.
Nastase has yet to respond to the letter, his aides said earlier this week, and his office staff said Friday they did not know of a reply having being sent in recent days.
His aides declined to say whether bust would be removed, but cited a decree passed in March which makes fascist and xenophobic organizations and symbols illegal and punishable by prison sentences of up to five years. Implementation has been slow.
Culture Minister Razvan Theodorescu has argued Antonescu's bust should remain in the government headquarters because it was part of a collection of busts of former prime ministers.
